The Arizona Cardinals are a banged-up football team.
Head coach Bruce Arians said Monday he expects money linebacker Deone Bucannon to placed on injured reserve after he suffered an ankle injury in Sunday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins.
As a result, the Cardinals are reportedly bringing in a familiar name to Arizona football fans. According to Mike Jurecki of Fox Sports 910, Arizona will sign linebacker Scooby Wright off of the Cleveland Browns practice squad.
Wright, 22, was a seventh-round draft pick of the Browns (250th overall) and has spent the entire season on the practice squad. He did have eight total tackles and one quarterback sack in four preseason games with the Browns earlier this year.
He enjoyed a stellar three-year college career at the University of Arizona. In 2013, he received Freshman All-American honors from 24/7 Sports and Athlon Sports after totaling 83 tackles. In 2014, Wright was one of the best players in the country, racking up 163 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 14 sacks and six forced fumbles. He won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Rotary Lombardi Award and the Chuck Bednarik Award in addition to being named the Pac-12 Pat Tillman Defensive Player of the Year. He helped the Wildcats to their first Pac-12 South division title and a trip to the Fiesta Bowl.
His junior season in 2015 was marred by injuries which limited him to just three games, but he did earn Defensive MVP honors in the New Mexico Bowl when he registered 15 total tackles and two sacks.
In early May, the Cardinals were in communication with Wright to come to Arizona if he wasn’t drafted, but then the Browns used their 14th and final pick on the linebacker.
Time to work!
