UA QB Foles says he must improve for team to get better

Jul 26, 2011, 4:17 PM | Updated: 5:42 pm

The Arizona Wildcats started last season 7-1 and held Rose Bowl aspirations.

The team finished the season 7-6, and having lost their entire offensive line as well as a few defensive stars, expectations for the team are not exactly high as they enter season number one in the Pac-12.

The one sure thing on the team is senior QB Nick Foles, and the Cats will only go as far as he can take them.

“I’ve got to play loose, can’t put too much on my shoulders,” Foles told Sports 620 KTAR’s Doug and Wolf. “I know this game, I just have to go out there and sling it.”

In two seasons with Arizona Foles has done just that, passing for 39 touchdowns and more than 4,500 yards. Still, the way last season ended — especially the Territorial Cup loss to ASU — has left a bitter taste in the QB’s mouth.

“The rivalry game, it will stick with you the rest of your life, and then you focus on the new season,” he said. “I get to play them again, so I’ve got to go out my senior year, I can’t wait to play against them.”

That’s why Foles, who is one of the best quarterbacks in the conference, said the team must finish seasons better than they have in the past.

“And that’s on me,” he said. “Me, being a senior leader, quarterback, if there’s ever a situation where there’s a lull I’ve got to make a change.”
