Without a shoe, Cardinals’ Kerwynn Williams burns Saints for a 49-yard score

The Arizona Cardinals might as well roll their most explosive players out there.

With playoff hopes all but officially dashed, Bruce Arians got creative early on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, rolling with three running backs: David Johnson, Andre Ellington and Kerwynn Williams.

The trio lined up in the backfield, at receiver and behind center at quarterback. Williams was featured in the Wildcat formation, and all he did out of it was take a snap for a 49-yard score 2:30 into the first quarter.

And he did it despite losing a tackler who managed to grab the running back’s shoe.

Linebacker Craig Robertson tracked down Williams but instead of making a shoestring tackle as a last-ditch effort, he pulled the cleat off Williams’ left foot.

Williams has always found success with the Cardinals in the few opportunities he’s gotten.

A seventh-round pick by the Colts in 2013, he has been on and off the Arizona roster and practice squad since he joined the team in September 2014. This year alone, he was released on Sept. 3, re-signed Oct. 3 after running back Chris Johnson went down with an injury, cut three days later and re-signed just five days after that, on Oct. 11.

Against the Saints, Williams closed the game as the Cardinals’ leading rusher by yardage with 63 yards on three carries.
