There weren’t a lot of bright spots for the 2016 Arizona State Sun Devils, but freshman wide receiver N’Keal Harry was one of them.
Harry was named a Freshman All-American by Scout.com Monday following a season in which he led ASU with 58 catches for 659 yards and five touchdowns.
Harry’s catch total led all freshman receivers and broke an ASU school record for freshmen previously held by tight end Zach Miller, who had 56 receptions in 2004.
“He’s been phenomenal,” said head coach Todd Graham. “He’s made progress in his blocking, he’s made progress in his route running, he’s still learning a lot. He’s a guy that has a lot more tools that we can use. You can’t ask anymore as far as his development. He’s really developed and done really well.”
The Chandler High product scored a touchdown in his first collegiate game on a 34-yard run in the season opener against Northern Arizona. He’d find the end zone in each of the next two weeks on receptions, helping the Sun Devils to victories over Texas Tech and UTSA.
Toward the end of the season, Harry notched back-to-back 100-yard receiving games, posting 114 yards each in losses to Utah and Washington.
The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder was one of five Pac-12 players on Scout’s team, joining Stanford offensive lineman Nate Herbig, Oregon linebacker Troy Dye, Washington defensive back Taylor Rapp and Washington State DB Jalen Thompson.
Harry has also been named to Freshman All-American teams by Campus Insiders and Pro Football Focus this offseason.
