Arizona Wildcats 12th in first release of College Football Playoff rankings

On Tuesday, in the first release of the College Football Playoff committee’s rankings, coach Rich Rodriguez and the Arizona Wildcats slid in at No. 12.
The 6-1 Wildcats was the second highest-ranked Pac-12 team in the poll, behind only Oregon, who were ranked 5th by the committee. Arizona awaits a matchup with No. 25 UCLA at the Rose Bowl this Saturday. The team’s lone loss came earlier this month to USC.
Mississippi State sits atop the poll, followed by Florida State, Auburn and Ole Miss.
For the first time ever, there will be a four-team playoff to determine college football’s national champion. The rankings are determined by a 12-member committee comprised of athletic directors (Jeff Long, Barry Alvarez, Pat Haden, Oliver Luck and Dan Radakovich), former coaches (Tyrone Willingham and Tom Osborne), a former conference commissioner (Mike Tranghese), a former reporter (Steve Weiberg) and other heads of state and administrators (Michael C. Gould, Tom Jernstedt and Condoleezza Rice).
