How close was Sean Miller to leaving University of Arizona basketball?

May 10, 2011, 1:38 AM | Updated: 4:05 am

University of Arizona head coach Sean Miller was a lot closer to leaving than I think anyone wants to admit.

In a Monday interview with Sports 620 Gambo & Ash, University of Arizona Athletic Director Greg Byrne commented on the fact that Miller did speak with him privately about the allure of the University of Maryland. Miller’s interest in the job was really no secret, but he just signed a contract to keep him in Tucson for a while.

But really, how close was he to leaving? In that same interview, Byrne used terms like “luckily” when describing Miller’s choice to re-up for a few more years. For a man who said that he and Miller were “completely on the same page” in regards to the direction the program was heading and where investment was needed, Byrne did not seem so confident that Miller was going to stay.
