If Arizona Cardinals vice president of player personnel Terry McDonough does become the new general manager of the San Francisco 49ers, it’s possible one of his colleagues, Cardinals offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin, may follow him.

CSN Bay Area reporter Matt Maiocco said Wednesday that McDonough will sit down with the Niners on Friday. On Arizona Sports 98.7 FM’s Off the Edge, Maiocco responded to the possibility of McDonough bringing Goodwin on as the team’s new head coach.

“I could see something when Terry gets in the building if that’s something that comes up,” Maiocco said. “If they really like what Terry has to say and his background and think he’s the best personnel guy that they’ve interviewed, then I could see that would be a possibility.”

Maiocco continued that he had not heard Goodwin’s name specifically, but said if the Niners like McDonough enough, they’ll give him a voice in picking the coach. McDonough, brother of Phoenix Suns general manager Ryan McDonough, is one of a reported nine candidates being interviewed by the Niners.

He’s in charge of the personnel departments for both college and professional players, and assists with drafting and contract negotiations as well. Over his career, he has worked for several different teams in scouting, amassing 25 years of NFL office experience. He spent 10 years with the Jaguars, serving as Director, Player Personnel for four years before heading west to join Steve Keim. The Cardinals promoted him to his current position in 2014.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if McDonough wanted to bring in an experienced coach he was familiar with like Harold Goodwin.

Goodwin took the job of offensive coordinator in Arizona in 2013. He has spent a decade working with Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, serving as an offensive assistant in Pittsburgh from 2007 to 2011 then as offensive line coach for the Colts in 2012, the same years Arians served as offensive coordinator for both teams.

Arians and Goodwin turned the Cardinals from the worst offense in the league in 2012 to one best in the NFL. While Arians does the play-calling for Arizona, Goodwin has played a major role in working with the offensive line.
