Report: Former Wildcats guard Jason Gardner to become IUPUI’s head coach

Mar 29, 2014, 9:00 PM | Updated: 9:00 pm

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) appears to have found a new head coach, ESPN’s Jeff Goodman said in a tweet Friday.

Goodman reported the university’s athletic director, Michael Moore, has reached a verbal agreement with Memphis assistant Jason Gardner to fill IUPUI’s vacant head coaching position.

Gardner is a former point guard for the University of Arizona, playing from 1999-2003. He posted 14.6 points and 4.6 assists per game in 136 appearances. He was a second team consensus All-American in 2003 and was a part of the 2001 team that was a runner-up in the NCAA championship game.

The former Wildcat hasn’t been coaching for long. He has served as an assistant at Memphis for one year under head coach Josh Pastner, and he had a stint on Loyola Chicago’s bench.

Gardner is an Indiana native. IUPUI went 6-26 in the 2013-14, including 1-13 the Summit League conference. Head coach Todd Howard was fired earlier in the month. The school last made the NCAA Tournament in 2003.
