GCU’s Russell carried off, returns after injury scare in win vs. San Diego Christian

Grand Canyon senior DeWayne Russell went down with an apparent left knee injury Tuesday as his Antelopes faced San Diego Christian, but he returned with what was called a bone bruise after halftime to finish with 17 points, four steals and three assists in a GCU victory.
In the first half of the 90-58 win, teammates and coaches carried the point guard off the floor after he had scored eight points and recorded three steals to go with an assist.

It was not immediately clear how Russell injured his leg, but The Arizona Republic’s Richard Obert tweeted that Russell appeared to be in “serious pain.”

Russell, a Peoria High School product who transferred to play for coach Dan Majerle after a one-year stint at NAU, was averaging 23.3 points, 5.1 assists and 3.6 rebounds heading into the Tuesday win. He was also shooting 42 percent from the floor and from three-point range.
Joshua Braun scored 20 points and GCU shot better than 62 percent in the victory over the NAIA’s San Diego Christian.
Russell had his 22nd straight game in double figures, while Oscar Frayer scored 14 and Shaq Carr 10 on 4-for-4 shooting.
The win was the third in four games this month for Grand Canyon (12-7) and is also the fourth straight game for Braun to score 16 points or better since a knee injury kept him out of all nine games in December.
San Diego Christian (5-11) was led by Isaiah Milan’s 24 points, shooting 10 of 16 from the floor. Hayden Fredrick added 11 points and Nathan Klekas 10 for the Hawks, who committed 17 turnovers.
GCU turned the miscues into 26 points, outrebounded its opponent 32-23 and outscored them 50-28 in the paint.
