SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Jewell Loyd scored 29 points, Taya Reimer added 19 and eight rebounds and sixth-ranked Notre Dame repeatedly attacked Georgia Tech inside en route to an 89-76 victory Thursday night.
The Irish (18-2, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) outscored Georgia Tech (12-8, 2-4) 54-40 in the paint, including 14-0 on fastbreak points, to win their fourth straight. But Notre Dame didn’t shake the Yellow Jackets until a pair of layups by Lindsay Allen and Reimer and a pair of free throws by Loyd with 5:33 gave the Irish a 17-point lead.
Loyd fell a point shy of a second straight game of 30 points. Brianna Turner added 14 points for the Irish, who shot 57 percent.
Kaela Davis led the Yellow Jackets with 24 points. Aaliyah Whiteside scored 16 points, the seventh straight game she’s scored at least 14 points, Katarina Vuckovic had 12 and Zaire O’Neil 10.
The Irish struggled defensively, allowing the Yellow Jackets to shoot 50 percent.
Davis cut Notre Dame’s lead to 59-51 with a jumper and had a chance to cut the lead to six after Loyd was called for an offensive foul. But Loyd made a pair of free throws after a turnover by Zaire O’Neil and Michaela Mabrey hit a 3-pointer to give the Irish a 13-point lead. The Yellow Jackets never got any closer than 10 points.
Notre Dame used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to open a 32-14 lead and appeared to be on the verge of breaking the game open. But Katarina Vuckovic hit a 3-pointer for Georgia Tech to spark a 20-8 spurt by the Yellow Jackets, cutting Notre Dame’s lead to 40-36 when O’Neil scored on a spin move inside. The Irish led 48-41 at the half.
