Former Arizona guard Stanley Johnson was selected with the eighth overall pick by the Detroit Pistons in the 2015 NBA Draft Thursday.
Johnson’s selection ensures that Arizona has had a player selected in the first round in each of the last three NBA Drafts.
A 6-foot-7, 245-pound forward out of Fullerton, Calif., Johnson excelled in his lone season at Arizona. He was named First Team All-Pac-12 in 2015 and was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year.
He was also selected to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team in 2015, leading the Wildcats with 13.8 points per game en route to the Elite Eight.
Johnson is the second lottery pick from Arizona in the last two seasons. The Orlando Magic selected former Arizona forward Aaron Gordon with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.
Arizona now has had 20 players drafted in the first round in their program’s history, and 13 lottery picks. Johnson is the 15th Arizona underclassmen to forgo eligibility and enter the NBA Draft early and be selected since 1991.
