Fans react to Diamondbacks’ World Series berth, Mad Dog’s pending retirement

Oct 24, 2023, 9:57 PM

Following the Arizona Diamondbacks’ win 4-2 against the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 7 of the National League Championship Series at Citizens Bank Park on Friday, the reactions, support and rose-colored glasses came out in the Valley.

Athletes, both current and former, and political dignitaries extended their congratulations to the D-backs on their first trip to the World Series since 2001.

But it wasn’t just about the baseball team in Arizona.

Beyond that, America had reason to celebrate. One of the country’s great hot-take artists, Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, had said before Game 6 that he would retire from his job as radio and TV opinionator if the Diamondbacks won two back-to-back games in Philadelphia.

They did.

Now, will he?

The D-backs themselves had heard of his proclamation and expectation they would not succeed.

They celebrated accordingly in the locker room, chanting “Mad Dog!” Fans online cheered with them.
