Arizona Diamondbacks reveal new Nike uniforms for 2020 season

CHANDLER, Ariz. — The Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday revealed their 2020 uniforms, their first iteration of Nike jerseys.

They revealed the set of six uniforms in full at the ninth annual D-backs Celebrity Golf Classic at the Whirlwind Golf Club.

Since the news broke in January that Nike would become Major League Baseball’s outfitter beginning in 2020, it was expected that each club would roll out new versions of their jerseys after the 2019 season.

The new-look uniforms aren’t a complete overhaul of the ones the Diamondbacks wore in 2019, but they include minor tweaks. Most notably, the gradient patterns on the shoulders and elsewhere are completely gone, while the font and color schemes remain largely the same.

“The black and teal is a nice little different kind of thing, and obviously the white and teal is my favorite. I pulled for that one to stay,” pitcher Robbie Ray said.

“I wasn’t a real fan of the gradient. I’m fine that it’s gone.”

Ray said he will miss the darker gray alternates, but admitted he liked the cleanliness of the new gray Nike outfits.

In another change to the jerseys, there is now a Nike logo on the chest. Previously, the former jersey manufacturer, Majestic, had its logo on the sleeve.

Infielder Eduardo Escobar, who modeled the uniforms before the reveal, said they feel the same as the previous jerseys. He’s a fan of the white versions and the red and black look.

“So beautiful,” he said Friday before taking in a round of golf.

Arizona last had a major uniform overhaul prior to the 2016 season.

The kits that include color schemes of Sedona red, teal, dark grey and black also received a tweak in 2017, when the graphics on the pant legs were most notably cut for a more simplistic look.

The D-backs, after receiving feedback from fans, also removed the teal outlining on the dark grey uniforms that clashed with the red piping and made the player names and numbers harder to read. It was replaced by white on that alternate uniform.

The Diamondbacks showed off their new jerseys prior to teeing off on the golf course Friday.

The tournament, which comes a week before Veteran’s Day weekend, has raised funds for military veteran initiatives through the team’s charitable foundation since 2011.

The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation has donated more than $1.8 million to organizations including Military Assistance Mission, Folds of Honor Foundation, Soldier’s Best Friend, Catholic Charities MANA House, Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, USO and Fighter Country Partnership.

“It’s been great,” Ray said of the event, which he’s attended the past three years. “Come out here, play golf, connect with everyone out here, it’s been fun.

“Obviously out on the golf course on a day like today, you can’t beat it.”
