With Madison Bumgarner set to return to the mound on Saturday, the Arizona Diamondbacks optioned infielder Andy Young to make room to activate the starting pitcher off the 10-day injured list.

Young had 34 plate appearances over 12 games played. He collected five hits, five walks and had a home run and 10 RBIs during his stint in the majors.

“Part of his process is to continue learning and growing,” manager Torey Lovullo told media on a Zoom call before Saturday’s game.

“My discussion with him was more centered around ‘Keep that rock moving in the right direction every single day no matter where you’re at and who’s teaching you.’ Touch decision for us but it was one obviously to get Bum active and that was the most important thing.”

He has been sent to the D-backs’ Alternate Training Site.

Bumgarner, meanwhile, is scheduled to make his first start since Aug. 9. He was removed early from that game due to back spasms and spent almost a month on the 10-day injured list with a mid-back strain.

In four starts this season, he has allowed 18 earned runs in 17.1 innings pitched and has an 0-3 record.

Bumgarner’s return off the injured list coincides with his return to Oracle Park for the first time since leaving the San Francisco Giants this past offseason.

He will get his first start against the team he spent 11 years with, a span in which he racked up a 119-92 record with a 3.13 ERA and won three World Series rings.

First pitch for game between the Diamondbacks (15-24) and Giants (18-21) on Saturday night is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
