PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks selected right-handed pitcher Drey Jameson from Triple-A Reno on Thursday, the team announced.

The 25-year-old rookie will be making his major league debut in a start against the San Diego Padres.

In a corresponding move, the D-backs placed left-handed pitcher Kyle Nelson on the 15-day injured list with left elbow inflammation retroactive to Sept. 13 to keep the 40-man roster at 40.

Jameson comes into the big leagues as Arizona’s No. 8 prospect by Baseball America and No. 9 by MLB Pipeline after being drafted No. 34 overall in 2019 out of Ball State.

In three seasons in the minors, he stuck out 289 batters across 255 innings pitched for an impressive 10.2 strikeouts per nine rate.

Jameson also made 25 starts between Doule-A Amarillo and Triple-A Reno in 2022, with his call up to the latter coming on April 28.

And since becoming a member of the Aces, the righty ranked third in strikeouts (109), fifth in innings pitched (114) and tied for fifth in starts (21) in the Pacific Coast League.

This will be the third IL stint for Nelson this season and second in six weeks after being activated on Sept. 1 due to lower back spasms.

In 43 appearances (one start) for the D-backs this year, Nelson has a 2-1 record and 10 holds to go along with a 2.19 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 37 innings tossed.

He has also struck out 30 batters and walked 14 while opposing hitters have a .194 average against him.
