D-backs INF Asdrubal Cabrera deferred surgery, received treatment instead

The Arizona Diamondbacks reinstated infielder Asdrubal Cabrera from the 10-day injured list on Friday.

Additionally, the team placed right-handed pitcher Seth Frankoff on the 10-day IL with right forearm soreness.

Cabrera last played May 13 before going on the IL with a right hamstring strain.

“When you see something like that happen and one of your athletes goes down the way he did, you just hold your breath,” skipper Torey Lovullo said Friday. “I just think it speaks volumes to what he’s doing away from the field on his own time. What his focus has been in getting back to us has been relentless.”

On Saturday, Cabrera told reporters pregame that he attributes his speedy recovery to the Diamondbacks’ training staff for helping him back to the field as soon as possible.

The D-backs infielder went on to say that the team’s first option was to have Cabrera undergo surgery to repair his hamstring but decided to get a cortisone shot instead so he wouldn’t miss even more time on the field.

“That’s why I preferred to get the shot,” Cabrera said. ” Because if I took the other way then it’s going to mean more time and I prefer to say on the field. It’s so boring watching the games on the TV.”

This season (34 games), the infielder is averaging .289 with 18 RBIs and four home runs. He’s also slugging .474 to go along with a .866 OPS.

His return to the D-backs’ lineup comes at a critical time for Arizona, which has lost 19 of its last 22 games.

With injuries to the starting rotation, Frankoff made his first start for the D-backs on May 15. Over three starts, Frankoff went 0-2, posting a 9.22 ERA over 13.2 innings pitched.

In Thursday’s 7-4 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, Frankoff closed out the game. He pitched a full frame, allowing an earned run on three hits.

The D-backs will look continue their series against the Brewers on Saturday.
