D-backs LHP Tyler Gilbert’s no-hitter earns him NL Player of the Week

Aug 16, 2021, 1:38 PM

It’s been a week of firsts for Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Tyler Gilbert.

The latest: Being named the National League Player of the Week by Major League Baseball on Monday.

Gilbert made his first career start on Saturday and threw the first no-hitter at Chase Field by a Diamondback. It was the fourth no-hitter for a pitcher making his starting debut and first since 1953 (Bobo Holloman).

His performance in a 7-0 Arizona home win against the San Diego Padres was the third no-hitter thrown in franchise history and first since 2010 (Edwin Jackson).

Gilbert finished Saturday with 64 strikes thrown in 102 pitches. He recorded five strikeouts to go with three walks.

It was Gilbert’s fourth appearance overall after he made relief appearances three times earlier in August.

Gilbert has a 0.00 ERA and 10 strikeouts through 12.2 innings during that span.

Gilbert, a Southern California product, was drafted in the sixth round by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2015 MLB Draft. He joined the D-backs’ Triple-A affiliate, the Reno Aces, this year and was called up by the Diamondbacks on Aug. 3.

MLB announced Monday that Gilbert, 27, won the NL Player of the Week honor alongside the AL recipient, Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Teoscar Hernandez.

Hernandez tallied eight runs, 10 RBIs and three home runs this past week.
