The Arizona Diamondbacks reinstated catcher Carson Kelly from the 10-day injured list and optioned outfielder Cooper Hummel to Triple-A Reno, the team announced Saturday.
Kelly suffered a strained left oblique when he was placed on the injured list on May 8.
The catcher had struggled up to this point in 2022. He was hitting .105 with one RBI, two walks and 20 strikeouts in 20 games.
Kelly was acquired as one of the staples in the trade that sent Paul Goldschmidt to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018.
Arizona was in need of catcher depth as utility man Daulton Varsho was asked to catch games as well as Jose Herrera. Varsho was originally a catching prospect as he rose through the minor legue ranks but has found the outfield to be his most played position with Arizona.
Herrera hit .191 with three RBIs, five walks and 21 strikeouts in 28 games.
This is Hummel’s first year in the big leagues, hitting .178, nine RBIs and two home runs in 41 games.
