D-backs rookie Corbin Carroll paces fastest home-to-3rd time since 2020

Arizona Diamondbacks rookie outfielder Corbin Carroll has hit the ground running since making his MLB debut on Aug. 29.

The 22-year-old’s speed has taken both the D-backs and their opponents over the last five weeks by storm and was on full display on Monday night.

In a 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, Carroll paced a new mark for the fastest home-to-third time since 2020 at 10.75 seconds.

“I’m going to say 95% of the players in this league are jogging into second base and taking off their shin guard before they get to the base and looking cool for the bat boy to come and pick it up and turning around and peeling off the batting gloves,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo on Tuesday.

Lovullo explained that first base coach Dave McKay preaches for players to use their right foot when rounding bases so that the angles are “crisp and clean.”

The manager also wants fans at home to enjoy the art of baserunning by watching the D-backs’ “right-foot touchers” when they sprint around the basepaths.

“Any time you see (Carroll) hit a ball into the gap, turn and watch him. Do not watch where the ball is. Do not watch where the fielders are,” Lovullo said. “We have about four or five players that I like to do this with.

“Watch the runner, watch them cutting off the angle at each base, the rounds around each base are limited. There’s so much grace with his combination of power and speed and it’s amazing. We all knew when that ball was going into that gap, it was hit 107 mph, we knew it was a triple, 100% a triple and it was fun for all of us to watch.”
