Diamondbacks sign RHP Junior Guerra to 1-year deal

The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to a one-year contract with free agent RHP Junior Guerra, the team announced on Monday.

According to the Arizona Republic’s Nick Piecoro, it is worth $2.55 million with a $100,000 buyout, totaling $2.65 million.

The Brewers non-tendered Guerra instead of paying the projected arbitration salary of more than $3.5 million, according to Rosenthal.

Guerra, 34, spent the last four seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, pitching to a 3.55 ERA across 83.2 innings in 2019 with nine wins and five losses.

He pitched out of the bullpen for Milwaukee last season after primarily serving as a starter for three years.

Guerra’s best season came in 2016, when he started 20 games for the Brewers and recorded a 2.81 ERA in 121.1 innings.

He struggled to a 5.12 ERA the year after but ended the 2018 season with a 4.09 ERA in a career-high 141 innings.

Considering the Diamondbacks have plentiful options in the starting staff, he figures to join the bullpen as a long reliever.
