PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Jordan Montgomery came out of Monday’s 11-6 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers after taking a comebacker off his leg in the seventh inning.

L.A.’s Teoscar Hernandez smacked a sharp ground ball up the middle that ricoheted of Montgomery’s right shin area for a single.

It left quite a mark:

Manager Torey Lovullo after the game called the issue a contusion. Montgomery is considered day-to-day.

“He just had trouble putting weight on that foot,” Lovullo said. “The trainer said he didn’t like it … at that point, where it was on the shin, you’ve got to be sure there’s not more damage than there already is or what there appears to be. So everything’s fine.”

Slade Cecconi had to quickly get ready to enter a tricky situation with runners on the corners and two outs. After Hernandez stole second — the third Dodgers stolen base of the inning — Cecconi gave up a two-run single to Will Smith. Los Angeles took a 6-1 lead by the seventh-inning stretch.

Montgomery entered the game in the fifth inning after starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez lasted only four frames.

The recently-converted reliever threw a pair of scoreless innings before getting in trouble with the top of the Dodgers’ order. He gave up a run on a Freddie Freeman sacrifice fly before getting tagged with two more runs from Smith’s single.

Montgomery has now made two relief appearances since losing his starting spot. He threw 70 pitches last week against the New York Mets and 43 before coming out of the game on Monday.
