Nick Ahmed placed on 60-day IL by Arizona Diamondbacks

Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Nick Ahmed was placed on the team’s 60-day injured list on Wednesday due to a shoulder injury that has lingered the past several seasons.

The D-backs also optioned left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert to Triple-A Reno and recalled right-hander Edwin Uceta from their taxi squad.

This season alone, Ahmed was shut down for a right shoulder issue on March 30 and worked his way back to return from the injured list on April 22. The 32-year-old, however, was back on the injured list May 16.

The most recent update regarding his setbacks came June 3, when the team shut down Ahmed’s further rehab attempts.

Ahmed was set to meet this week with Dr. Neal Elattrache in Los Angeles to further evaluate the issue.

The shoulder injury, Ahmed told AZCentral.com’s Nick Piecoro, dates back to before the 2020 season.

It had bothered Ahmed toward the end of the 2021 season when he was put on ice and despite treatment — including platelet-rich plasma and cortisone injections — the shortstop continues to have issues.

“With Nick, we obviously are cautiously optimistic that things are going to be OK,” Lovullo told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo on Tuesday. “What that timeline is, we don’t know. Talking with Nick, he just felt like it was a little too much, he had to step out of that rehab to get himself healthy. If it’s long term after he sees the doctor (and) there’s a procedure that’s needed, we feel like we have ample backup.”

Gilbert was the team’s starter in Tuesday’s 14-8 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. The lefty allowed six earned runs and lasted only 1.2 innings, bumping his ERA to 7.88 in four outings. Gilbert was taking the place of Humberto Castellanos in Arizona’s starting rotation after Castellanos was placed on the 15-day injured list on June 1.

Uceta has given up five earned runs across the 4.2 innings pitched in his three appearances.

The D-backs continue their series against the Reds on Wednesday with a first pitch at 3:40 p.m. you can hear on ESPN 620 AM and 98.7 FM HD-2.
