PHOENIX — Michael Phelps, as part of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Swim Night, threw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the team’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.

The 23-time Olympic gold medalist was to take part in a Q&A session after the first pitch with fans who bought special ticket packages.

The Swim Night event was part of Arizona Drowning Impact Awareness Month.

Phelps, originally from Maryland, trained under Bob Bowman, who is the swim coach at Arizona State University. Phelps has helped with the school’s swim program as well.

He has also participated in the Waste Management Phoenix Open celebrity Pro-Am in Scottsdale, an event held every February as part of the local stop on the PGA Tour.

Phelps, now 34 years old, has 28 total Olympic medals — the most by any individual in the history of the Olympic games.
