Report: D-backs’ assistant GM Jared Porter hired as Mets GM

Dec 12, 2020, 4:32 PM | Updated: 4:45 pm

Arizona Diamondbacks Assistant General Manager Jared Porter is reportedly leaving the desert for the Big Apple after being hired as the new general manager of the New York Mets, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.

The Mets were focused on Porter and he was their first choice to replace former GM Brodie Van Wagenen, Heyman tweeted.

Porter joined the D-backs in November 2016 after two seasons with the Chicago Cubs working as the team’s director of professional scouting/special assistant.

Prior to joining the Cubs, Porter spent 11 seasons with the Boston Red Sox serving in various roles during the same time as D-backs GM Mike Hazen, who was also hired by the D-backs in November 2016.

In addition to being a favorite in New York, Porter was considered a strong choice to rejoin the Cubs as their GM, according to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, after former GM Jed Hoyer replaced Theo Epstein as the club’s president of baseball operations.

Porter had also been rumored to be a finalist for the GM job with the Los Angeles Angels.

The D-backs went 285-261 during Porter’s seasons with the club, including a postseason appearance in 2017, the team’s first in six years.

Porter joins a Mets club that is in transition after multiple executives in the front office, including Van Wagenen, parted ways with the organization once billionare Steve Cohen purchased the team in November.

The Mets have a record of 346-362 since losing to the Kansas City Royals in the 2015 World Series, only making the playoffs once during that span, a loss in the 2016 Wild Card Game.
