Suns sign NAZ point guard Josh Gray to 10-day contract

Following the horrific injury to Isaiah Canaan Wednesday night, the Phoenix Suns needed a point guard and it took them less than 24 hours to find one.

The Suns signed Josh Gray, the point guard for the team’s G League affiliate, to a 10-day contract, 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s John Gambadoro reported Thursday.

Phoenix made the signing official on Friday before hosting the Utah Jazz at 7 p.m.

With the NAZ Suns this year, Gray is averaging 17.9 points, 4.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.2 steals in 31.8 minutes a game over the course of 31 appearances.

In seven of his last 10 games, Gray has scored 20-plus points for Northern Arizona.

In the first week of January, Gray was named the NBA’s G League Player of the Week. In those two games he played that week, Gray put up video game numbers, posting averages of 24.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 6.0 steals a game, shooting 56.3 percent from the field.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound point guard will bring the Suns some much-needed shooting. On 179 3-point attempts for the NAZ Suns this year, he’s shooting 42.5 percent.

The Suns have recently moved Devin Booker into the role of the team’s starting point guard, relegating Tyler Ulis to the bench. The team, though, was still using Canaan and Ulis in spurts, a spot where Gray figures to contribute.
