It took 13 seconds of game time for Arizona State to take a 7-0 lead over Arizona.

Less than a minute later, the Sun Devils turned it into a two-possession game. They only needed two plays with the ball in their hands — one of the kickoff and one on a run — to score a pair of touchdowns.

ASU had a 14-0 lead over Arizona 56 seconds into the 94th annual Territorial Cup. Coming into the game without a win, the team was intent on a fast start against the also-winless Wildcats.

Freshman D.J. Taylor started his Territorial Cup experience by returning the opening kick for a touchdown. It was the first time ASU returned an the opening kickoff for a touchdown since 2011 and the first kick return for a touchdown since 2015, according to the school.

On ASU’s first defensive possession, the Sun Devils forced a fumble that was recovered by junior linebacker Darien Butler. That two-play, negative-four yard Arizona drive lasted for 32 seconds and gave ASU the ball at the four-yard line.

Freshman running back DeaMonte Trayanum punched in the touchdown on the first play of the game.

ASU is playing just its third game of the season after three others were canceled due to coronavirus protocol. The Sun Devils have losses to USC and UCLA.

Arizona is 0-4 with losses to USC, Washington, UCLA and Colorado.
