Javan Robinson’s late interception, Cam Skattebo’s 3 touchdowns seals Sun Devil win vs. BYU

Javan Robinson’s late interception helped No. 21 Arizona State hold off No. 14 BYU in a 28-23 historic program victory on Saturday.

The sophomore cornerback picked off BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff with 1:04 left in the game as BYU was driving down the field trying to take its first lead of the game.

On second-and-10 from the ASU 39-yard line, Robinson made the vital interception.

ASU thought it would be able to run out the clock for the victory, and fans stormed the field and took down the goal posts; however, officials put one second back on the clock and had to remove the fans from the field.

A delay of 14 minutes occurred, and BYU had one final shot from the BYU 49-yard line. Even though the Hail Mary was caught by Chase Roberts, the Cougars were four yards short of the end zone.

The win gave ASU (9-2) its first undefeated home season (6-0) since 2004 and put ASU a win away from securing a berth in the Big 12 Championship Game with a trip to Tucson next Saturday to take on Arizona.

Cam Skattebo’s 147 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground helped the Sun Devils to a 21-3 lead at the half; however, the Cougars would claw their way back into the game with three second-half touchdowns to trim ASU’s lead to 28-23 after BYU scored 14 unanswered points.

Kenny Dillingham decided to go for it on four-and-1 from the 11-yard line with 2:34 left but ASU quarterback Sam Leavitt was stopped short of the first-down marker, giving BYU the ball back before Robinson’s takeaway.

ASU quarterback Sam Leavitt threw for 247 yards and one touchdown on the day, highlighted by a 61-yard bomb to wide receiver Xavier Guillory with 2:06 left in the third quarter.

The Sun Devils will travel to Tucson for the Territorial Cup against Arizona on Nov. 30 at 1:30 p.m. Watch the TV broadcast on FOX. The game was one of many Big 12 matchups placed on a six-day selection, meaning the time and TV was announced at later date.
