A former Arizona State Sun Devil is taking the next step in his coaching career.

After spending the 2019 season as an offensive graduate assistant at ASU, former Sun Devils QB Mike Bercovici is joining the Arizona Cardinals staff, Devils Digest reported Tuesday morning. He now joins offensive-minded head coach Kliff Kingsbury and second-year signal caller Kyler Murray.

Last season, he worked with true freshman QB Jayden Daniels as the signal caller got his feet wet at the collegiate level. Under Bercovici’s tutelage, Daniels turned in an impressive freshman campaign, throwing for 2,943 yards, 17 touchdowns and just two interceptions on 60.7% passing (205-338). He also ran the rock 125 times for 355 yards and three scores.

Bercovici, 27, sticks close to home, having played for both the Sun Devils and Cardinals over the course of his playing career.

In four seasons with the Sun Devils (2012-15), Bercovici tallied 5,332 passing yards, 42 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 28 games played. He completed just over 60% of his passes (438-724). Most ASU fans will remember Berco for his part in the “Jael Mary.”

Following his time at ASU, Bercovici signed on with the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent in 2016. He was released by the team during final cuts before signing a reserve/futures contract with the Chargers, now in Los Angeles, in 2017. He was waived later in the year.

Shortly after being waived, Bercovici signed on with the Cardinals’ practice squad in October 2017. He was released that November.

After his NFL stint, Bercovici spent 2018 as a member of the Alliance of American Football’s San Diego Fleet. Drafted in the second round in the quarterback draft, Bercovici played in four games, throwing for 1,101 yards and five touchdowns. Bercovici also threw seven interceptions, and was a familiar name for most AAF fans after taking a huge hit in the team’s season opener.

He had originally signed on with the Arizona Hotshots before being drafted by the Fleet. The league folded in April 2019.
