ASU basketball lands 4-star recruit Austin Nunez

Sep 5, 2021, 1:27 PM

Head coach Bobby Hurley and Arizona State basketball landed their second recruit for the 2022 class on Sunday, with 4-star point guard Austin Nunez announcing his commitment via Twitter.

Nunez joins center Duke Brennan as the first two prospects in ASU’s 2022 class.

Nunez is a 6-foot-2, 165-pound player from the San Antonio area and plays at Karen J. Wagner High School.

247Sports ranks him No. 96 in his class and No. 11 at his position. Rivals has him at No. 69 overall but No. 15 at point guard.

Here’s his evaluation from 247Sports recruiting analyst Brandon Jenkins:

The lefty is one of the best in the country at heating up from behind the arc. Each year he has become more of an explosive player in space. Defensively, he has the foot speed and quickness to be a valuable asset in man-to-man play. In terms of leading a talented high major college team, he has solid feel as a passer but will need to improve some with his decisions on when to score and when to defer to teammates. His ability to knock down shots from long distance at the point guard spot will provide programs to take advantage of his ability to excel on and off the ball at the next level.

From his tape, Nunez has a quick release and a smooth, left-handed shooting stroke.

The Sun Devils are entering a transitional year with six freshmen and four transfer students on the roster. Roster staples from past seasons like guards Remy Martin and Alonzo Verge Jr. transferred this offseason and 2020 5-star commit Josh Christopher is in the NBA.

Adding Nunez’s commitment continues to solidify the new corps going forward.
