Cam Skattebo sets ASU program record for single-season rushing yards

Cam Skattebo’s season had already cemented him as a legend in ASU history, and he now owns the top spot in program record books for single-season rushing yards.

The running back entered Wednesday’s Peach Bowl matchup with Texas needing 75 yards to pass up Eno Benjamin (2018). He finished with 143 rushing yards and two touchdowns, along with a touchdown pass in ASU’s heart-breaking 39-31 double-overtime loss.

Skattebo got the record in the third quarter on a drive that included a 33-yard scamper as well as chunk runs of five and six yards against a stout Texas defense.

He was downright dominant in the fourth quarter, when he threw a 42-yard touchdown pass, caught a 62-yard pass, ran for a touchdown and a two-point conversion. He scored another touchdown in overtime.

Skattebo won the Peach Bowl Offensive MVP despite playing for the losing side.

It’s only fitting that Skattebo’s outstanding season be recognized in the record books after he finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting. His ascension helped spearhead a program turnaround from 3-9 last year  — when he took a real dose of quarterback snaps due to injuries — to 11-2 with a Big 12 title this year.

“ASU has changed my life forever in a good way. Simple. They’ve supported me through everything, put me in a position to be successful,” Skattebo said postgame.

Who previously held the rushing records Cam Skattebo broke?

Benjamin’s star season came in his sophomore year in which he led the Pac-12 in rushing attempts (300), yards (1,642) and touchdowns (16).

He broke Woody Green’s then-record of 1,565 rushing yards (1972) with 118 rushing yards in a Las Vegas Bowl loss to Fresno State when he needed 77 yards for the record.

Benjamin and Skattebo each played 13 games on their way to setting the records.

Cam Skattebo breaks touchdown records

Skattebo also broke ASU’s single-season rushing touchdowns record after coming into the game tied with Green (19 in 1972).

Plus, Skattebo passed Wilford White (22 in 1950) for the most total touchdowns in a single season.
