Arizona Cardinals new backup quarterback Colt McCoy has found confidence in his specific role during the second week of training camp with the offense under Kliff Kingsbury.

“I am playing with a lot of confidence and sort of picked my mojo up a little bit,” said McCoy. “I am in a place that is very quarterback-friendly, there are a lot of targets to throw to. I really like the way Kliff sees the game, he sees the game from a quarterback’s perspective.”

The Texas Longhorn legend has played 12 years in the NFL for four different teams, most recently playing for the New York Giants in 2020 and appearing against the Cardinals.

In New York, it was apparent that quarterback Daniel Jones was the heir to the Giants’ throne, similar to the situation in Arizona with Kyler Murray.

McCoy acknowledged his role but mentioned how he can contribute beyond playing on Sundays.

“Number one: you always have to be ready. What I want to bring to the room is a consistent approach. I know Kliff expects a lot out of all the quarterbacks in the room,” McCoy said.

“I want to consistently come out here and learn the little details of our system. It is always hard, even as the years go on and I get older, coming into a new system you haven’t played. Understanding the philosophy is one thing, but understanding the small little intricate details that go into every play protection and snap count … For a backup quarterback, you always have to be ready. When I go in, try and sound like Kyler, his snap counts and how he’s operating.”

The Cardinals struggled in the last two games of 2020 as Murray dealt with injuries.

They saw their playoff hopes shredded against two backup quarterbacks in C.J. Beathard and John Wolford as the 49ers and Rams benefited greatly from having confident backups.

“You look at Kliff’s track record of quarterbacks, he has coached so many good ones,” McCoy said. “Guys have always played well under him. When they called me this offseason and I had the opportunity to come here, I felt really good about it, prayed about it, and man I really feel like I made the right decision.”
