Already missing their No. 2 and 3 cornerbacks, the Arizona Cardinals suffered another blow at the position Sunday against the Miami Dolphins when starter Kevin Peterson suffered a concussion in the second quarter.

Peterson was ruled out by the third quarter, forcing Arizona defensive coordinator Vance Joseph into some tough decisions.

The duo of Jace Whittaker and De’Vante Bausby joined starter Patrick Peterson as the only healthy cornerbacks remaining.

That was the case because nickelback Byron Murphy was placed on the COVID-19 reserve list this past week, while corner Dre Kirkpatrick could not get healthy for the Week 9 home game due to a thigh injury.

Whittaker, an undrafted rookie who played collegiately for the Arizona Wildcats, moved to corner even though he’d mostly been playing nickel dating back to training camp.

The Dolphins game marked Whittaker’s NFL debut after he was called up from the practice squad Saturday.

Arizona in nickel packages deployed Bausby at cornerback, who has 19 games of NFL experience but only joined Arizona on Oct. 30. Whittaker moved to slot in nickel packages with Bausby on the field.
