Dolphins put Myles Gaskin on IR, in injury trouble at RB vs. Cardinals

Nov 5, 2020, 7:48 AM

The Miami Dolphins’ top two running backs missed practice with injuries Wednesday, further complicating efforts to get their ground game going.

Myles Gaskin sat out with a knee injury before Miami coach Brian Flores announced Thursday he would be on injured reserve, while Matt Breida is nursing a hamstring injury.

Flores did not rule Breida out for a Sunday game against the Arizona Cardinals but told reporters that “hamstrings are tough.”

Gaskin has been the Dolphins’ best backfield threat with 387 yards on 3.9 yards per carry with an additional 198 yards receiving. But the Dolphins rank 28th in the NFL in rushing and is next to last in yards per attempt at 3.6.

The injuries could mean more playing time Sunday at Arizona for Jordan Howard, a two-time 1,000-yard rusher for the Bears who has run for just 14 yards this year.

Howard, a 6-foot, 230-pound back has mostly played a goal line specialist role. He has three touchdowns this year.

Patrick Laird and Salvon Ahmed are also on the roster at running back.

Laird has a career 2.7 rushing yards per carry average but has no rushes and three catches thus far in 2020.

Ahmed, a rookie out of Washington, has not recorded a rush this year.

Miami also lists rookie Malcolm Perry as a running back/receiver. He has a rush for -5 yards this season.

Miami swapped draft picks with the Kansas City Chiefs to acquire fifth-year running back DeAndre Washington before the Tuesday trade deadline, but he is not eligible to play against the Cardinals.

Washington, who played for head coach Kliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech, spent his first four seasons in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders and has 1,127 career rushing yards and 615 receiving yards in his NFL career.
