Kansas City Chiefs could play starters full half vs. Arizona Cardinals

Aug 18, 2021, 9:30 AM

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid will give his starters an extended look in the second of three preseason games Friday at the Arizona Cardinals.

Reid said Wednesday that most of his starters will play as much as the entire first half at State Farm Stadium, according to ESPN’s Adam Teicher.

“We’ll go a half, somewhere there about, with the starters, and then the twos and threes will take the second half,” Reid told reporters.

That won’t change how the Cardinals divvy their snaps, said head coach Kliff Kingsbury, who did not play starting quarterback Kyler Murray in a preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

“We’re going to do what we think is best for our team and go from there,” Kingsbury said Monday.

“Everybody’s probably treating it differently. We know we have a great opponent coming it. It’ll be a great test against some of their really good players, so we’re hopeful that we can improve and take one step forward, but I think each team probably has a different philosophy on it.”

So the Chiefs’ decision to roll with their starters will provide Arizona an opportunity to either improve its starters to get a look at some of its depth.

In Kansas City’s preseason opener, a 19-16 win against the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday, the Chiefs played some of their starters for three possessions during the first quarter, though quarterback Patrick Mahomes only appeared for the first drive.

Several of the Cardinals’ starters likewise played the full first quarter in their preseason opener.

Kingsbury initially said Murray would play against Dallas last week before the quarterback didn’t dress against the Cowboys. As for how the teams manage their quarterbacks this week, that remains up in the air again.

“There’s always a fine line,” Kingsbury said. “There’s always a risk you take by putting those guys out there. Some teams don’t do it, some teams do. I don’t know what’s right or wrong.”
