Gannon: Cardinals’ Kyler Murray hasn’t hit his ceiling yet

Nov 11, 2024, 6:55 PM

TEMPE — Outside of two throws, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray really could do no wrong across his team’s 31-6 win over the New York Jets in Week 10.

Completing all but two of his 24 passing attempts on his way to a 91.7% completion percentage, 266 yards and a touchdown, the signal caller was public enemy No. 1 for a Jets defense that had been strong against quarterbacks up until Sunday.

It truly was a historic performance for Murray, who set a new franchise record with 17 straight completions in a game.

Throw in his two scores on the ground, and New York just couldn’t hang with Arizona’s signal caller.

“It’s the best I’ve felt,” Murray said postgame. “Obviously, the game being taken away from you and being in a system like this, the attention to detail, I say it all the time with (offensive coordinator Drew Petzing), the way he communicates it, there’s no gray area. We’re on the same page.

“Year 2 being in the system, I just feel good seeing the game slowed down. Obviously, it’s my sixth year in the league. I just continue to take it one day at a time and continue to play well.”

Even when the Jets may have thought they had him — the monstrous Quincy Williams sack on Murray being the best example — the quarterback locked back in and continued to deliver haymakers.

Sunday’s performance marked yet another masterclass showing from Murray, who has now thrown at least one touchdown in all but one game on his way to 12 scores to just three interceptions. He’s added another 371 yards and four touchdowns on 46 carries.

He’s enjoying a career high passing success percentage of 53.3% and is averaging 7.5 yards per passing attempt. Only during 2021’s run to the playoffs does Murray have more yards on average at 7.9.

But for how good Murray has been in 2024, head coach Jonathan Gannon believes there’s still plenty to unlock moving forward.

“I felt like he was a premium player and I felt in my mind that if we put the right people in place and coached him the right way, he could elevate his game to another level, which I think he has,” Gannon said Monday.

“And I don’t think he’s hit his ceiling yet.”

For now, though, it’s onto the bye week for the quarterback and the rest of the team, where football is still very much at the forefront of Murray’s mind with Week 12’s matchup against the Seattle Seahawks not that far off.

“I know the bye week can feel like a getaway, but I wouldn’t get too far away from it,” Murray said after Sunday’s win over the Jets.

“I know I’m not, mentally. You just have to stay locked in. I know we don’t have a game this week, but football will be on my mind.”
