NFL.com: Cards’ ‘burning question’ is whether to use No. 13 on receiver

With multiple needs on both offense and defense, what the Arizona Cardinals do with the No. 13 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft is anyone’s guess.

However, with the wide receiver trio of Clemson’s Mike Williams, Western Michigan’s Corey Davis and Washington’s John Ross looking like potential first-round picks, the Cardinals might choose to take one of them as a future replacement to Larry Fitzgerald, who considered retirement following the 2016 campaign and will be 34 by the end of the 2017 season.

NFL.com analyst Elliott Harrison certainly thinks it’s possible, as his “burning question” for Arizona’s draft is if they will look for “Larry Fitzgerald 2.0” in the first round.

The general thought is Williams, who led Clemson with 98 catches for 1,361 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, will not be on the board at pick No. 13, which is why Harrison brings up Davis and Ross as possible future Cardinals.

The Cardinals hold a key pick on Day 1. It’s no secret they must think about drafting a quarterback. Following Tony Romo’s retirement, you can bet the Texans are curious as to what Arizona could do. Maybe the Cards take ILB Reuben Foster, who not only would fill a need, but also remove him from the wish lists of several teams that own picks from No. 14 through the end of Round 1 (like the Eagles, Titans, Raiders, Steelers, Ravens, Saints). Secondary help is not out of the question. I have to think the Cardinals take wideout Corey Davis if he’s there. While John Ross is geting taken high in plenty of mocks, Arizona already has deep-ball threats. (Look out for J.J. Nelson this season.) With Michael Floyd departed, getting a big red-zone target who can fill the eventual Larry Fitzgerald void makes more sense. According to NFL.com draftnik Lance Zierlein, Davis wasn’t asked to block much in college. He sure as heck will if he goes to these guys.

The 6-foot-3, 209-pound Davis finished with 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2016, after amassing 3,785 yards and 33 touchdowns over his first three seasons at Western Michigan. He holds the record for most career receiving yards in NCAA history with 5,278 and led the country in receiving touchdowns last year.

On the other hand, Ross, who measures in at 5-foot-11 and 188-pounds, set an NFL Combine record last month with his 4.22 40-yard dash. He had a standout redshirt junior season last year with Washington after spending his first two years as a backup and kick return specialist and missing all of 2015 with a torn ACL. The speedster finished 2016 with 1,150 receiving yards and a Pac-12-high 17 receiving touchdowns.

Five of the 21 mock drafts tracked by Arizona Sports have the Cardinals taking a receiver with the 13th pick. Ross comes in with three, while Davis goes to the Cards in two. Quarterbacks Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes and Mitchell Trubisky are the only other players who appear in more than one mock.

As far as how the current state of the Cardinals receiving corps is concerned, head coach Bruce Arians recently said he’s “fine with where we’re at.”
