For Arizona Cardinals fans, the NFL head coaching job tracker is something to watch for the second consecutive year.
The team announced it had let Steve Wilks go on Dec. 31 after just one season on the job. Wilks went 3-13 in his lone season at the helm. On Tuesday, the Cardinals hired Kliff Kingsbury. Officially, they were the first team to announce the hiring of a head coach.
Two more teams added head coaches later on Tuesday, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hiring former Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians and the Green Bay Packers adding former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur.
On Jan. 9, two more coaches were taken off the board as the Cleveland Browns reportedly stayed in-house, hiring OC Freddie Kitchens as their next head coach. The Broncos also reportedly made a move as well, tabbing Chicago Bears DC Vic Fangio as their next HC.
The openings around the league started months ago when Cleveland let Hue Jackson go.
In early December, there was another opening when Mike McCarthy was fired in Green Bay the same day they lost to the Cardinals.
On the final day of the season, both Dirk Koetter and Todd Bowles were fired from their positions with the Buccaneers and Jets, respectively. And as of the morning of Dec. 31 — also known as black Monday — four more jobs had opened up for a total of eight.
