Steve Breaston likely leaving the Arizona Cardinals

Whoever the Cardinals quarterback is this season they will likely have one less offensive weapon at their disposal.

According to the Arizona Republic’s Kent Somers wide receiver Steve Breaston won’t return to the Cards.

It’s not officially known where Breaston will land — although the Kansas City Chiefs seem like the front runner offering him a 5-year contract with $9 million in guaranteed money — but it sounds like the reason he is leaving is because of money. It appears other teams are offering more than the Cardinals are willing to.

The news means in a little over a year the Cards have gone from having one of the deepest groups of receivers in the NFL with Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin and Steve Breaston to one featuring Fitz and a cast of unproven youngsters. Ken Whisenhunt and his staff will have to rely on two unproven commodities in Early Doucet and Andre Roberts to pick up the offensive slack.

It also means that the Cardinals are losing a great guy in the locker room and in the community. Breaston is known for who he is as a person just as much as he is for what he’s done on the field.

There is still a lot to be done before training camp opens and adding another receiver could very well be on the Cardinals to-do list. As things stand right now though, quarterback is definitely not the only offensive issue they are facing right now.
