What’s next? Arizona Cardinals disperse before training camp ramps up

Jun 20, 2022, 2:35 PM

TEMPE — With the conclusion of mandatory minicamp on Wednesday, the Arizona Cardinals now have some unrestricted time away before training camp kicks off in late July.

While a number of Cardinals are sticking close to the team facility — the rookies will be training in Tempe for at least the next two weeks — not everyone is staying put in the desert.

With that being said, here’s what a number of Cardinals and their head coach have planned over this pre-training camp down time.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury

After trying out some new things and working on some old during OTAs and minicamp, head coach Kliff Kingsbury now heads for some R&R outside of the states:

“I’m gone, out of the country, unreachable for any of y’all,” Kingsbury said Tuesday. “I get away for about three weeks and then we’ll really get in and start finalizing scripts for training camp and put them all together and get it rolling.

“I’m going to go on a Buddhist retreat the next four weeks,” the head coach joked when talking about getting screamed at about touches among his skill players.

Inside linebacker Isaiah Simmons

On top of his offseason workout regiment, Cardinals inside linebacker Isaiah Simmons will also be trying to compromise with his adult-self.

“Being a grown up sucks,” Simmons said Tuesday. “I try to find days where I’m not spending any money but there’s always like a bill or something you just have to do as an adult. ‘Why do I have to do this?’

“I’m kind of settling in a little more of being an adult. Being an adult is fun but it sucks, too.”

Running back Eno Benjamin

Cardinals running back Eno Benjamin is planning on continuing to stay in shape while also making his new house into a home.

“Not anything too big,” Benjamin said of his offseason plans on Wednesday. “I recently just bought a house in Texas so I am going back there. I’m pretty excited about that.”

On top of hanging at his new crib, Benjamin will also be hosting his second annual youth football camp.

Wide receiver Marquise Brown

It’s all about getting his body right and spending time with quarterback Kyler Murray for wide receiver Hollywood Brown.

Regardless on where they train, it’s a no-days-off mentality for Brown.

“I’m going to work starting tomorrow,” Brown said Wednesday. “Starting tomorrow, I’m going to get my body right and then wherever Kyler’s at, that’s where I’m going to be.”

Defensive lineman Zach Allen

Cardinals defensive lineman Zach Allen took four days off and not many more this offseason as he’s worked to get back to 100% from an ankle injury that required surgery.

And even with him heading to see his family in Connecticut for a little bit, he’ll still be able to get the proper work in to continue on his rehab.

“I literally have not had a break at all. I think I went home for Easter,” Allen said Tuesday. “Luckily, I got a great gym back home and (strength and conditioning coach Buddy Morris) knows the guy well so I was able to stay on top of everything there.”

Tight end Trey McBride

For Cardinals rookie tight end Trey McBride, it’s about staying locked in the playbook and to his offseason routine.

“I’ll go back to Colorado where I’m from and then I’ll continue training,” McBride said Tuesday. “I’ve got to make sure mentally more than physically, just this playbook has been so deep and trying to get up to speed with that.

“So really staying in the playbook and then there’s some things that I — just from these few weeks that I’ve been here — that I know I can work on and things I got to sharpen up that I’m not good enough at yet that I need to get fixed by the time training camp rolls around.”
