Defending champion Mark Wilson is one of 132 players vying
for over $1 million in prize money at this week’s Waste
Management Phoenix Open.
The TPC Scottsdale hosts the event this weekend with many
notable players from the FedEx Cup Standings attending.
Of the top 30 players in the standings, 22 of them are
playing in the event, which begins Thursday.
Wilson, who beat Jason Dufner in a playoff last year in
Scottsdale, is one of seven former Waste Management
Phoenix Open winners in this year’s field.
ASU alum Phil Mickelson, who has won the event
twice, will be playing for the 23rd time, along with four
other former Sun Devils: Billy Mayfair, Pat Perez, Jeff
Quinney and Chez Reavie.
Three-time event champion Mark Calcavecchia, who won in
1989, 1992 and 2001, will be making a record 26th-
consecutive start. Calcevecchia joins Gene Littler and
Arnold Palmer as the only 3-time winners of the event.
Also in the field are 2011 FedEx Cup champion Bill Haas,
and Scottsdale resident Arron Oberholser, who is coming
back from a hand injury and is making his first PGA Tour
start since the fall of 2009.
The field is competing for a total purse of $6.1 million
with 500 FedEx Cup points going to the winner.
