Shane Doan has been with the Arizona Coyotes dating back to the days when they were the Winnipeg Jets, but he could potentially be suiting up for another team before the end of the 2016-17 season.
The 40-year-old captain has suggested that he would potentially waive his no-trade clause if the perfect situation were to come along.
However, Coyotes general manager John Chayka isn’t losing sleep over the situation.
“I haven’t had any discussions in the last several weeks now,” he told Doug and Wolf Wednesday on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. “And like I said on this show, I think it is slightly overblown.”
The trade deadline is March 28, so Chayka and Doan still have some time to consider all their options.
“A month away, it’s not something that’s pressing on either side,” Chayka said. “So we’re just focused on our own team here in terms of improving in the short-term and the long-term.”
Doan is the franchise leader in numerous statistical categories, including games played, goals, assists, points, GWG and PPG. He has made two All-Star appearances in his 21 years with the team.
“As of now, he’s happy to be a Coyote, and we’re certainly happy to have him, and he’s not planning on leaving anytime soon,” Chayka said. “But, at the same time, we’re not trending toward the playoffs and, if there’s a perfect spot that comes up, then maybe he’d be open to considering it.”
The Coyotes currently have the second lowest point total in the league at 38, but they have gone 3-1 in their past four games.
