Cardinals won’t bring in Tiki Barber to replace Ryan Williams
The Arizona Cardinals are down a running back, but they will not be turning to the “Today Show” for Ryan Williams’ replacement.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Peter King, the former Giant-turned-broadcaster-turned-NFL free agent agent’s said the Cardinals are looking a different direction.
I just don’t get why a team desperate for an experienced back wouldn’t look at him. It can’t do any harm to work him out. I realize there are some teams who need spare running backs to also play special teams. But teams like Arizona, Detroit and Tampa Bay have enough youth all over their roster to take on a veteran back and make him a runner only.
With all due respect to Mr. King, umm, pass.
Sure, Barber was one of the league’s best backs when he last played, but that was in 2006. Four seasons away from the game likely haven’t made the 36-year-old any better, and there’s no chance he’ll contribute on special teams.
No, what the Cardinals need to do is sit back and wait. Chances are someone better than Barber will become available before the season opener, and at that point the Cardinals should make a move.
Panicking and signing a guy who hasn’t played since Dennis Green was roaming the Arizona sideline is not the way to go.
