In Patrick Corbin’s first spring training start on Monday, he set a strong precedent following a shaky 2016 season after pitching two hitless innings against the Cincinnati Reds.

“I know last year was a really frustrating year for him,” Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said the day of Corbin’s first spring start. “I know he found himself in the bullpen but landed back on his feet and that’s a credit to his mental strength.”

While that outing was 28 pitches of scoreless work, Saturday’s against the San Diego Padres was more of the hit and miss variety Corbin showed last season.

The left-hander pitched three innings, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks. He also had two strikeouts.

Unlike his first outing against the Reds, Padres hitters were getting much better contact off Corbin.

A Wil Myers double in the first inning didn’t bring home a run, but Corbin wouldn’t be as lucky on his second trip through the order.

Back-to-back triples by Jose Pirela and Travis Jankowski in the third inning would score Pirela and was the first earned run of the afternoon for Corbin. The second would come from the next batter on a groundout RBI from Carlos Asuaje.

Corbin finished the third and his day was over after 49 pitches, 28 of them for strikes.
