Cardinals add Brodie Croyle to QB mix

Down some quarterbacks, the Arizona Cardinals picked up free agent Brodie Croyle Wednesday. The question is, why?

The 28-year-old Croyle was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, and has thrown for just 1,669 passing yards and eight touchdowns during his career.

Croyle spent the last two seasons playing for former Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley in Kansas City, and his familiarity with Arizona’s offense made him an appealing option.

“He was with Todd in that system so there is obviously some similarities there,” Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “As far as getting him in here in two days and having him potentially ready to play, we felt like that was the best opportunity for us.”

Croyle doesn’t have much time to learn the system before Saturday night’s preseason game. Whisenhunt understands the difficulties facing his new quarterback.

“We have two games in five days,” Whisenhunt said. “It would be hard to get just any QB in here up to speed with ability to play.”

Still, Whisenhunt is pleased with the signing.

“We had good grades on him thought he was a good player coming out,” he said. “It’s not like were just bringing just any guy in here.”
