Patrick Peterson notches first score as a Cardinal

Aug 28, 2011, 5:50 AM | Updated: 7:40 am

Patrick Peterson finally got one.

With just more than two minutes remaining in the first
quarter the rookie
read
Chargers QB Philip Rivers’ eyes, left his man and made a
break on the ball.
A
little running and a couple of jukes later, touchdown.

“It felt great because I was screaming the whole way to
the end zone,” Peterson said.

Collecting his first career interception — preseason or
not — is a special
moment, but the way the former LSU star did it impressed
San Diego’s Pro
Bowl QB.

“On one of the timeouts he’s like ‘Where the freak did you
come from,'”
Peterson said. “I don’t think he saw me.”

And yes, Peterson said Rivers really did say “freak.”

The word Ken Whisenhunt used to describe the No. 5 overall
pick was
“explosive.”

“He will get there,” the head coach said. “He is a guy
that really works at it,
it means a lot to him, and we are excited to have him.”

Incidentally, while the pick six was certainly a nice
play, Peterson actually
imagined he’d reach the end zone for the first time in the
NFL on special
teams.

“Actually I really thought it was going to be a punt
return and I almost had
one today and the guy on the ground tripped me up,” he
said. “Definitely
not
being an athletic person on that play.”
