Here is a very bad play by the Diamondbacks

Apr 10, 2017, 3:28 PM | Updated: 10:07 pm

Things have been going the Diamondbacks’ way en route to a 6-1 start in the familiar confines of Chase Field.

A single play to their first road game, at San Francisco, wasn’t as pretty.

And it cost them the game in a 4-1 loss to the Giants on Monday.

Taijuan Walker first hit the Giants’ Buster Posey in the head with a pitch, and then Walker and catcher Jeff Mathis put together a textbook example of how not to handle a swinging bunt by Giants pitcher Matt Moore.

With the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Walker fielded the slow roller on his knees and darted the ball to Mathis at home plate — but he threw the ball into the dirt.

Mathis recovered the ball behind him and his throw to Walker, who was now standing on home plate, went off the pitcher’s glove. Paul Goldschmidt then recovered the still rolling ball and threw it back to Walker for the third attempt at a tag-out at home plate. That was caught … but it was too late to apply a tag.

The sequence would go down in the box score as a fielder’s choice off of Moore’s bat along with errors on Mathis and Walker. The three runs scored on the play also ended up being enough, as the Giants came away with a 4-1 victory.
