Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Shelby Miller will undergo Tommy John surgery. Miller announced his decision to reporters before Saturday’s game against the Colorado Rockies.

Miller was weighing his options earlier in the week after suffering a forearm flexor strain and a partial tear of his ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow during his start last Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was placed on the 60-day disabled list Thursday.

The 26-year-old Miller is coming off a disappointing 2016 campaign that did not meet the high expectations set after being acquired from the Atlanta Braves. Traded for No. 1 overall draft pick shortstop Dansby Swanson, outfielder Ender Inciarte and right-handed pitcher Aaron Blair, Miller went 3-12 with a 6.15 ERA in 20 starts and spent a portion of the season in Triple-A Reno.

In his four starts this season, Miller nearly reached his win total from last season, going 2-2 with a 4.09 ERA. He did not allow more than three earned runs in any of the outings, earning a decision in all of the starts.

Zack Godley was inserted into the D-backs rotation Wednesday in place of Miller, pitching five innings and giving up two runs. He was optioned back to Triple-A Reno after the start.
