The Cardinals worked out free agent Blaine Gabbert on Thursday, ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported, and a day after Arizona’s look at the former Jaguars and 49ers quarterback, AZ Central’s Kent Somers reported the sides had continued talks.
Four days later, it remains to be seen how close the two sides might be on agreeing to a contract.
Gabbert has thrown for 38 touchdowns, 37 interceptions, 7,351 yards with a completion percentage of 56 in his six-year NFL career — three each with Jacksonville and San Francisco.
The Cardinals, who openly entered the NFL Draft mentioning the need to find veteran Carson Palmer’s replacement behind center, didn’t select a quarterback, leaving their post-Palmer outlook murky.
Behind Palmer remain Drew Stanton and Zac Dysert, but neither is considered a permanent starting quarterback. The Cardinals also signed undrafted rookie Trevor Knight out of Texas A&M and will get a look at him this weekend during rookie mini-camp.
News of mutual interest between Arizona and Gabbert surfaced earlier last week.
