D-backs hold Chase Field’s first cow milk-off for a good cause

Bullpen — more like cowpen.

Now that the inevitable bad joke is out of the way, there was a good reason the Arizona Diamondbacks brought an actual cow out of the bullpen.

Shamrock Farms donated a tanker truck filled with 6,000 gallons of milk to Phoenix’s St. Mary’s Food Bank for The Great American Milk Drive, and they partnered with the D-backs to raise awareness of the event.

Tuesday marked Chase Field’s first cow milk-off in history, and pitchers Archie Bradley, Andrew Chafin and J.J. Hoover held a milking competition of elite milk-producing cow Pokie.

Archie Bradley said before the competition he was just “going to grab and pull down. Hopefully, milk comes out.”

While we don’t have the official numbers, you can tell from the video that Bradley didn’t execute as well as Hoover, who came away victorious.

Hoover’s squeezes per nine innings rate blew Bradley and Chafin away, and his milk above replacement stats for his career just took a positive leap.

And about the charitable cause, you can get involved. The D-backs encourage fans to text MILK to 80077 and give $5 to Feeding America to help deliver milk to needy local families.

Donations can also be made at milklife.com/give.
