Arizona Cardinals lead the way for specialty license plates

Jun 28, 2017, 9:20 AM | Updated: 2:51 pm

Though the Arizona Cardinals had a down 2016 season, it’s safe to say they are still the top dog when it comes to Arizona sports.

All one needs to do is hit the road to realize it.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, of the sports-related specialty license plates, the Cardinals dominated the professional clubs by a wide margin in 2016.

In fact, the 70,382 Cardinals license plates issued dwarfs the combined total of the Diamondbacks, Suns and Coyotes.

That’s just the professional teams, however, and money raised from the plates go to Cardinals Charities, the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation, Suns Charities and the Arizona Coyotes Foundation, respectively.

The state’s three major universities are also represented, though perhaps surprisingly it is the University of Arizona who paces that group, with 23,588 plates sold compared to 17,760 for Arizona State and 2,716 for Northern Arizona University.

Money raised from those plates goes to the schools.
